Students of determination
The official UAE term for children with additional needs, adopted nationally in place of the language of disability. It carries a policy expectation, not just a change of vocabulary.
Why students of determination matter.
Knowing the term is practically useful, because it is the language the policy documents use. A request that quotes the framework a school is inspected against reads very differently from one that does not.
The framing across the UAE's regulators is consistent: inclusion is the school's responsibility, and a child's place should not depend on a family privately funding it. How far that is honoured in practice varies by school, which is precisely why written requests and written replies matter.
Questions that get a real answer
- What is the school's published position on students of determination?
- What support does the school provide itself, without extra fees?
- Can we have that in writing?
Ask these of anyone, including us. What you are listening for is not the right answer — it is whether the answer is specific enough to be wrong.
