IEP

The school's own written plan for a child — targets, provision and review dates. Outside support should work to it rather than beside it, or the child ends up with two plans and no one plan.

What this means for your child

Why an IEP matters.

Most IEPs a parent is shown are not tests of anything. Targets like "will improve focus in class" cannot be failed, which means they cannot be passed either, and a year later nobody can say whether the provision worked.

The one adjustment that changes an IEP most is insisting each target names who does what, how often, and how you will know. That is not an unreasonable ask and it is the difference between a document and a plan.

Commonly confused. Confused with a legal entitlement. In the UAE an IEP is a school document; what it commits the school to is a matter of what it says.

Worth asking

Questions that get a real answer

  • Which of these targets could my child fail?
  • Who delivers each item of provision, and how often?
  • What data will exist at the next review?

Ask these of anyone, including us. What you are listening for is not the right answer — it is whether the answer is specific enough to be wrong.

If a report still doesn't make sense

Send it to us and we'll translate it.

Any report, from any provider, including ones we have nothing to do with. We will tell you in plain English what it says, what it recommends, and which parts are actually supported by the evidence in it. No charge, and it does not make you a client.
